The penetration here is unbelievable and when finished, it leaves a flux slag on top of the weld. What this is is a flux core that runs consumable shielded gas where you can weld some big projects with. On your flux core there is another wire I call dual shield. If you were to try and weld with hardwire when its windy your gas will be thrown all over the place with impurities on your weld and nothing but porosity which can be a train wreck. You can weld wherever you want and you can weld with wind. Welding with flux does have its benefits though. Welding with this wire can be tough to make your welds consistently look good because it gets smoky, slag bounces everywhere, isn’t a clean weld and requires more clean up after. There’s no need to use gas when you weld because of the flux inside. Its called flux core because there is flux in the core of the wire. If you plan on buying a 110 welder be sure to check that it has a provision for gas because the option will be there if you ever need it when you want to run hard wire through your machine. 110V are great for repair work and wrought iron welding. Duty cycle is important if you plan on doing a lot of welding. For example, if I turn this welder all the way up and start welding, it will probably go for one minute before tripping a breaker. It will usually trip a breaker and the time can vary depending on how high you turn up the machine. This 110V welder I have here has a duty cycle of 12 minutes within the hour meaning you can weld continuously for 12 minutes before the machine shuts off. If you’re not sure what duty cycle means I’ll explain. This will up the duty cycle of your machine. If you’re just getting into welding and are looking for a machine to get you started I recommend finding a welder with the option to run 110V or 220V. I’ll be using the same 110V welder for both so you can directly see how they perform and weld differently. I’ll go over everything you need to know between the two. Every welder has their preferences, but I like to use both depending on the circumstances I am in. Flux core and hard wire MIG welding has it’s benefits and differences. ![]() ![]() ![]() The data shows Shake Junt was also outselling Jessup, marking an interesting development as mid-tier brands look to dislodge the top two. The industry is dominated by a few leading brands – some born from within skateboarding, like Grizzly and Mob, and others originating from a wider manufacturing background like Jessup.Īccording to ActionWatch data from earlier this year, Mob firmly leads on sales to the skateboarding industry in the US. Levels of grit vary slightly, from Jessup and Mob’s M-80 to the grippier standard Mob, as do available widths, but the core is pretty standard. “Basically all the smaller brands come from the same source,” notes Ben Woody, VP of Product at NHS, which makes Mob Grip. However, there are a number of companies who have grip produced in Asia and get it cut and printed in the US. Some well-known competing brands even use the exact same factories for their products.Īmongst the leaders, Jessup is understood to be the only brand both manufacturing and selling skate griptape itself in the US, and Mob does have its own exclusive facility. Manufacturing’s moved out towards Asia, but there are still only a few actual grip manufacturers in the world. While grip itself hasn’t changed much, the market has evolved. Whatever griptape Koston was skating in Menikmati is virtually the same stuff on your board today. Most skate grip is made with silicon carbide, and we’ve figured out the optimal grit sizes and how to get it to stick to the deck. Brown said, “Bud was the one who started really bridging the gap between manufacturing and the skateboard industry, attending the skateboarding trade shows and making connections.”Īfter Bud Smith got his first order off Powell Peralta, the skate industry followed on a global scale, and he built Jessup into the biggest-selling griptape brand in skating at the time.įast-forward to 2020 and fundamentally nothing has changed. That was until Bud Smith, who worked for industrial manufacturer Jessup, really seized the opportunity to tap into the fast-growing skateboarding market after his son got a Vision board and told him a lot of kids were getting into it. When skating took off in the ‘80s, brands of industrial non-slip tape such as Wooster and Mactac started selling their products into the skateboarding market, as a way to make money on the same product they already manufactured. ![]() “The lower the grit number, the bigger the grit per square inch – and Pizza Tape was probably 50 grit, where today’s griptape is around 70.” “That stuff was dangerous!” recalls Beau Brown, who started skating in the early ‘70s and went on to found the first-ever skate griptape brand, Flypaper. ![]() One type of griptape used by skaters was so gritty it was nicknamed Pizza Tape – its rough surface was reminiscent of pizza toppings. Others would re-use safety tape, peeling off 1-inch strips from school staircases or truck side steps. For a while, skaters experimented with Slip Check – an anti-slip spray for surfboards invented in 1965 – and DIY concoctions of resin set with sprinkled sand. BRIEF HISTORYĪs surfers developed the first skateboards in the ‘60s, it quickly became apparent that more grip would be needed to garner enough board control on the streets. Burberry graphic? Get ready for late flips.)ĭespite applying it to our decks for years, many of us haven’t even asked some of the most basic questions about the stuff: What’s it even made of? Who’s making it? And what’s up with those pro models? This curiosity led me to griptape geeks, manufacturers, and marketers the world over who gave me the dirt on our beloved sandpaper. ![]() This strip of sandpaper is not only functional, it acts as the skater’s form of self-expression, and you can often guess someone’s trick list or personality profile from their grip job of choice. I try not to judge a book by its cover, but I can never quite help myself from judging a skater by their griptape. ![]() ![]()
![]() Al-Uqlidisi later invented a system of calculations with ink and paper "without board and erasing" ( bi-ghayr takht wa-lā maḥw bal bi-dawāt wa-qirṭās). The numerals themselves were referred to in the west as ashkāl al‐ghubār ("dust figures") or qalam al-ghubår ("dust letters"). The use of the dust board appears to have introduced a divergence in terminology as well: whereas the Hindu reckoning was called ḥisāb al-hindī in the east, it was called ḥisāb al-ghubār in the west (literally, "calculation with dust"). Ĭalculations were originally performed using a dust board ( takht, Latin: tabula), which involved writing symbols with a stylus and erasing them. Some amount of consistency in the Western Arabic numeral forms endured from the 10th century, found in a Latin manuscript of Isidore of Seville's Etymologiae from 976 and the Gerbertian abacus, into the 12th and 13th centuries, in early manuscripts of translations from the city of Toledo. The Western Arabic numerals came to be used in the Maghreb and Al-Andalus from the 10th century onward. They show three forms of the numeral "2" and two forms of the numeral "3", and these variations indicate the divergence between what later became known as the Eastern Arabic numerals and the Western Arabic numerals. ![]() The oldest specimens of the written numerals available are from Egypt and date to 873–874 CE. ![]() In the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, the Arabs were using the Eastern Arabic numerals or "Mashriki" numerals: ٠ ١ ٢ ٣ ٤ ٥ ٦ ٧ ٨ ٩ Īl-Nasawi wrote in the early 11th century that mathematicians had not agreed on the form of the numerals, but most of them had agreed to train themselves with the forms now known as Eastern Arabic numerals. The reason the digits are more commonly known as "Arabic numerals" in Europe and the Americas is that they were introduced to Europe in the 10th century by Arabic speakers of Spain and North Africa, who were then using the digits from Libya to Morocco. However this was done with different symbols.Įvolution of Indian numerals into Arabic numerals and their adoption in Europe The numerals have found worldwide use significantly beyond the contemporary spread of the Latin alphabet, and have become common in the writing systems where other numeral systems existed previously, such as Chinese and Japanese numerals.ĭecimal notation was developed in India, with expansion to non-integers in Arabia. European trade, books, and colonialism helped popularize the adoption of Arabic numerals around the world. Two centuries later, in the Algerian city of Béjaïa, the Italian scholar Fibonacci first encountered the numerals his work was crucial in making them known throughout Europe. The term numbers or numerals or digits often implies only these symbols, however this can only be inferred from context.Įuropeans learned of Arabic numerals about the 10th century, though their spread was a gradual process. The Oxford English Dictionary differentiates them with the fully capitalized Arabic Numerals to refer to the Eastern digits. They are also called Western Arabic numerals, Ghubār numerals, Hindu-Arabic numerals, Western digits, Latin digits, or European digits. The term often implies a decimal number, in particular when contrasted with Roman numerals. ![]() They are also used for writing numbers in other systems such as octal, and for writing identifiers such as computer symbols, trademarks, or license plates. But luthiers of the Andes started to construct their own versions of the instrument. At the time that the instrument first made its way to South America, it had 5 courses of strings, with each course being composed of two strings.
